All You Need to Know About EduNav+: Empowering Blind Students in STEM

What is EduNav+?
EduNav+ is an interdisciplinary assistive technology project developed during the 2025 Accessible STEM Hackathon. It brings together artificial intelligence, mobile technology, wearable devices, and accessible design to support blind students in their academic journey. The solution focuses on two primary goals:
Making STEM content more accessible in real time.
Supporting independent navigation around educational environments.
From reading handwritten equations on the board to guiding a student safely to their classroom, EduNav+ covers it all.

How Does EduNav+ Work?
The EduNav+ system is centered around two core components: a mobile app and a wearable navigation assistant.
1. Mobile App
The EduNav+ Android-based mobile application is the heart of the learning experience. It includes:
Live Speech-to-Text Transcription: Using tools like Whisper ASR or Vosk, lectures and classroom instructions are transcribed in real time, then converted into clear audio or Braille output.
Math and Diagram OCR: Through an integrated camera and OCR engines (like Mathpix and Tesseract), the app captures and translates whiteboard content, including formulas, into spoken explanations.
Braille-to-Speech Module: Simulated or real Braille pads can be used to provide tactile feedback, especially for diagrams and math.
Online Class Integration: Students can join Zoom or Google Meet and access live transcriptions, making remote learning accessible.
User-Friendly Interface: Designed with voice commands, large buttons, and high contrast for ease of use.
2. Wearable Navigation Assistant
EduNav+ includes a low-cost wearable prototype—smart glasses or a chest-mounted sensor unit—with the following features:
Obstacle Detection: Using LiDAR or Time-of-Flight sensors (e.g., VL53L0X), the device senses obstacles and alerts the user.
Audio & Haptic Feedback: The user receives navigational cues via audio instructions or vibrations (like “turn left in 3 meters”).
Bluetooth Beacon Mapping: Small beacons are placed near entrances, lecture halls, or staircases to provide precise indoor directions.
Together, these systems create a seamless experience from navigating a building to understanding complex STEM content.

Blind students are often marginalized in STEM classrooms, not because of ability, but due to a lack of accessible tools and inclusive design. EduNav+ is built from the ground up to meet their real-world needs.
It’s low-cost, using open-source hardware like Raspberry Pi and readily available sensors.
It’s flexible, capable of running offline with options for online integration.
Most importantly, it’s co-designed with and for the blind community, ensuring every feature addresses a real challenge.
